Poland : Analysis of young mothers’ reasons for choosing medicalized childbirth

In Poland, a growing number of women believe childbirth has become over-medicalized – such as the use of oxytocin to hasten delivery, epidurals, episiotomies and heart monitoring – and feel boxed into an overly passive role.

In response, Sylwia Lisowska, who won a PLN 10,000 Maïeutics Prize in 2016, wants to analyze young mothers’ reasons for choosing medicalized childbirth as well as the consequences of this choice, i.e. does the decision to use, rather than reject, medical treatments such as hormones make delivery any easier? What conclusions can be drawn about the risks and benefits of medicalization?
